The Medina County Probate and Juvenile Court will be closing at noon on Friday December 19, 2025

My Child Got a Traffic Ticket. What Do I Do Next?

Juvenile traffic court is different than adult traffic court.

The agency that cited the juvenile with a traffic ticket will deliver the ticket to the Juvenile Court for processing. Once the traffic ticket is entered into the Juvenile Court system, a Summons to Appear will be issued to one parent and the juvenile. The summons will have the court date and time along with the Magistrate who will be hearing the case. It is not uncommon for it to take two weeks before the summons is mailed out.

One biological parent or guardian is required to attend the hearing even if the juvenile is 18 years of age.

There is no Intake Interview for Juvenile traffic tickets.

If the Juvenile has no priors, this is their first offense and live in Medina County they may be eligible for Carteens. If the Juvenile is eligible, a Carteens flyer will be mailed along with the Summons to Appear.

Depending on the traffic offense the respective agency will determine if the juvenile is eligible for a diversion program. The Medina County Sheriff’s Office will contact the juvenile about a diversion program. If the juvenile fails to follow the diversion program’s policy, then the ticket will be delivered to the court for processing.

Most often a juvenile who lives in Medina County will attend court in Medina County regardless of the county where that offense happened.

What is Carteens?

Caution And Responsibility by TEENS

  • Reducing the number of repeat juvenile traffic offenders
  • Decreasing the number of teen traffic offenders
  • Increasing teen awareness of traffic/vehicular safety

A certificate of completion will be sent to the Juvenile Court but it is the juvenile’s responsibility to follow up with the Court.

What is a Diversion Program?

Program provided by the Medina County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Juvenile Court. If the respective agency determines that the juvenile is eligible, they will not send the traffic ticket to the Juvenile Court but instead deliver the juvenile’s contact information to the Medina County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s office will contact the juvenile about the next steps. If the juvenile fully completes with the diversion program, the ticket will never go to court. If the juvenile fails to follow through with the diversion program, then the ticket is sent to the Juvenile Court to be processed.
